Q. I would like you to share something about yourself with our readers.
Thanks. My name is Neel Anil Panicker and I have been a career journalist for the first ten years of my career. Thereafter I moved into a more public space and have been working as an educator, academic and life coach, besides continuing with my journalistic pursuits.
In the course of two score professional career I have worked and travelled across various geographies. This helped me meet and learn from a diverse cross sections of people and personalities, helping me not just broaden my understanding of society and its inhabitants but also was deepened my insight into human psychology and the various types and motivations of people thereof, all this ultimately finding its way and enriching my writing experience.
Q. How did you come up with the idea of writing this genre?
Prior to writing this book, I have written two books, both works of fiction. The first, ‘The Taste of the Elements of Life’ is an eclectic collection of short stories, all flash fiction, and about stories that cover the entire gamut of human emotions.
The second book, also fiction and entitled ‘When Life Throws Those Curve Balls’ is what I termed ‘realistic fiction’ is a memoir and is a more expansive effort culled in parts from my own life but with liberal doses of heightened imagination.
After having two books of fiction, I decided to try my hand at a different genre and I thought what better than writing an academic book, one that be immensely useful for the student community, especially those who find themselves struggling with the finer nuances of English Grammar.
Q. Where did you find the inspiration to write this book?
What I have just written is my debut non-fiction book ‘English Grammar For All- A To Z of Punctuation’. The immediate inspiration for this were my students, especially those who are preparing for highly competitive examinations such as would gain them entry into B-Schools, Indian and Foreign institutes of repute, help clear various competitive examinations including Staff Selections, Banks, Law etc.
Q. What exactly does your book convey?
Over the years, I have been besieged by my countless students, both and present, to write a book on one particular aspect of English Grammar and that is Punctuation.
As we all know but are able to make sense of, it is a punctuation that adds and sharpens; or dilutes and deletes the original intended meaning of a sentence.
It requires precision understanding of all the punctuation rules for us to be able to use it to masterful effect.
I decided to finally pay heed to the requests of my countless students, both present and past, and sat down to write this book which is a detailed effort and encapsulates all the 14 Rules of English Punctuation. Each punctuation has been The book is my gift to the student community and I sincerely hope and pray that it finds pride of place in every student’s study table and serves as an invaluable reading and study resource as they grapple and make sense of the complexities and the nitty gritty of English Grammar.
Q. What all was going in your head while penning down this book?
From the outset I was very clear that this book must be a paradigm game changer’ quite different and unique.
That it would contain all the wisdom that I gained and culled from over the years and hence it would be one stop abode for all who want to know and master every single element about Punctuations.
Hence, my focus was geared towards making it a near perfect effort and I do hope and pray that I have succeeded in bringing out a book that the students would regard as their Bible when it comes to knowing all that needs to be known about English Grammar Punctuation.
Q. How much time you used to commit to this book?
This book, right from conceptualisation, to the outlining and the further delineating of each chapter, all 14m of them, to the actual task of writing it down and then re-reading it over and over, to proofing and finally submitting it for peer review has taken a little over three years.
Q. Was there any moment you backed off from the idea of writing a book?
Well, truly speaking, not one single nano moment! I have been a writer for the past over two score years and believe me when I say that not one single moment of it has been anything but pleasurable.
Plus, I was completely aware of my responsibilities to the students and hence was trebly careful while penning don this book as I want my readers, especially the students, to derive maximum benefit from this book.
Q. How do you handle the criticism that comes towards your way?
Well, if there is anything that I have learned from my writing career over the years it is to welcome all forms of criticism. Criticism, constructive criticism that is, is the lifeblood of any writer, and serves as a much needed tonic, a much course correction helping a writer to fine tune his craft and take it to a higher level.
So, as I said, there is nothing to handle about a criticism; it is everything to do with what one does about it, and how best one takes the positives out of it to better oneself the next time.
Q. How was your experience with Bluerose throughout the publishing of the book?
In one word__rewarding. Plus, I have met and made a set of people, all hardworking committed professionals who have been with me in every single step of this amazing journey.
They have created a masterful product, the cover design is simple awesome, and been a constant source of support and encouragement for me.
As such my immense gratitude goes to all of them including Syed, Priti, Sayan, Aman, Shweta, Hanshika et al. To them and to every member of the fabulous Blue Rose family I extend my sincerest heartfelt thanks.
Q. How would you like to advice budding authors?
I read somewhere that a writer is the one who stays in the room.
Well, that says it all.
Simple write, write and then write some more.
That and then a lot of reading.
Do these two and you are good to go.
